Namibia self-drive guide

Responsible Self-Drive in Namibia

A good Namibia 4x4 trip is not only about the vehicle. It is about driving the route properly, protecting fragile landscapes, understanding gravel-road limits and knowing when to ask for local support.

Respect gravel roads

  • Slow down before bends, blind rises, river crossings and corrugations.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and avoid sudden steering corrections on loose gravel.
  • Do not chase an itinerary at unsafe speed. Distances in Namibia are longer than they look on a map.

Protect wildlife, farms and communities

  • Never drive off established tracks. Off-track driving damages fragile desert and grassland areas.
  • Close farm gates exactly as you found them and respect private land.
  • Give wildlife space. Do not block animals, crowd waterholes or leave food waste behind.

Prepare tyres and the vehicle properly

  • Ask Namvic about tyre pressure before leaving Windhoek and before difficult gravel sections.
  • Stop early if a tyre looks low, damaged or hot. Small problems become expensive in remote areas.
  • Know where the jack, wheel spanner, compressor and recovery gear are before you leave town.

Plan fuel, water and daylight

  • Refuel when you can, not only when you must. Remote fuel stations can be far apart.
  • Carry drinking water for delays, punctures or route changes.
  • Avoid arriving at campsites or lodges after dark, especially on gravel roads or wildlife routes.

Use the right route support

  • Share your rough route with Namvic so we can flag long, rough or unsuitable sections.
  • For remote routes, consider GPS, satellite phone and compressor options where appropriate.
  • If something goes wrong, stop, stay safe and contact Namvic before turning a small issue into a bigger one.
